Your first five YouTube videos: a simple starting plan

Sample article for design review. This test post lets us review the blog layout, typography, images, and calls to action.

Starting a YouTube channel can feel like a hundred decisions at once. Your first few videos do not need to answer all of them. They need to give you a useful place to begin.

Start with one viewer and one problem

Picture the person you want to help. What are they trying to learn, choose, or do? A clear question gives your video a job and helps you explain why someone should watch.

A useful first video starts with a clear promise: here is the question we are going to answer.

Give your first five videos a purpose

Instead of choosing five unrelated ideas, build a small collection around the same audience. Here is a simple set of prompts to explore:

  1. Answer a beginner question. Explain one thing your audience wants to understand.
  2. Show a process. Walk through a task from start to finish.
  3. Compare two options. Help someone make a more informed choice.
  4. Share a lesson. Talk through something you tried and what you learned.
  5. Follow up. Answer a related question that your earlier videos bring up.

Think about the title before recording

Write a working title and a one-sentence description of the video before you film. If the promise is hard to explain, narrow the topic. Your title and thumbnail should help the right viewer recognize that the video is for them.

Make the next video easier

After each upload, note what felt clear, where the process slowed down, and what you want to improve next time. Choose one improvement for the next video. Building a repeatable process is more useful than trying to perfect everything at once.
